Hi ya!
I know I've been away. As spring came bursting back my life has really picked up speed, a common theme for spring for many. I only have a second but I really wanted to share that I have completed my training to be a Birth Doula! I have a few steps to accomplish before certification but with my training complete I am well underway! The best part now is I am ready to assist with birth, wahoo!
I am completing my training and certification process through Doulas of North America (DONA) International. The first thing I learned about doula work is that not many people know what exactly a doula is so...a Birth Doula is a proffesional labor support guide trained and experienced in providing continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to a woman and her partner during birth.
DONA's specifications
A Birth Doula
~Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life
~Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
~Assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth
~Stays with the woman throughout the labor
~Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decision
~Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers
~Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of the birth experience
~Allows the woman's partner to participate at his/her comfort level
Isn't that swell?! I am so very honored and excited to be of service in this way
Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth
Isn't that swell?! I am so very honored and excited to be of service in this way. I have so much information and tools to use I just can't wait! Zippa-dee doula!!
Alas, time is slipping. I hope to write more soon!
Namaste!

Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth
- tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications
- increases positive feelings about one’s childbirth experience
- reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans
- reduces the mother’s request for pain medication and/or epidurals
